Yanks for nothing -- 1) an expression of disgust applicable anytime Billy Traber or LaTroy Hawkins or Kyle Farnsworth enters and exits a game within the span of about 90 seconds; 2) what I get every morning by having free cable TV here in Taiwan

Yankeeng my chain -- an expression of disbelief every Yankee fan utters whenever he hears that Brian Cashman is going after another pitcher on the free agent market

Yank-ticipation -- the feeling Yankee fans get about a week before spring training or every morning of the regular season

Yank-xiety -- 1) how opposing pitchers feel before facing a bruising Yankee batting order; 2) how Yankee fans feel whenever (Name-A-Yankee-Reliever) comes into the game before the seventh or eighth inning

Sheppard recovering, but slowly

George Vecsey has his usual wonderful piece in the Times today, and it concerns the gradually improving health of longtime Yankee Stadium announcer Bob Sheppard. Due to a slow recovery from an illness he contracted last fall, Sheppard will not be in the booth for Monday's Opening Day game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Thursday, April 17 will mark the 57th anniversary of Sheppard's service with the Yankees. Sadly, the legendary PA announcer will not be on hand when the Yankees host the Red Sox that evening. According to Vecsey's piece, Sheppard will not be back at the mic until at least June, perhaps as late as July.

It goes without saying how terrible it would be if Sheppard were to miss the final All-Star Game ever in America's most important athletic arena. Let's all wish him a speedier recovery.

More importantly, Yankee leadoff hitter George Halas retires, ending his brief major league career after just 22 hitless at-bats. ... 1937, Suffering from an 0-for-21 slump, Lou Gehrig surrenders the clean-up spot in the order to third-year slugger Joe DiMaggio, who drives in three runs in a 4-2 Yankee win over the St. Louis Browns.

... 1946, The Yankees become the first team to schedule airflights for all of their road trips. Using the Yankee Mainliner, the team flies to St. Louis. Five players, including star pitcher Red Ruffing, refuse to fly and take the train instead.

... 1955, Mickey Mantle becomes just the fourth Yankee to hit three home runs in one game at Yankee Stadium (Lazzeri, Chapman, and Dickey are the others). Mantle's homers help the Yankees down the Tigers, 5-2. Mantle has all five RBI and hits two homers left-handed and one right.

On May 14...

... 1920, the seeds for Yankee Stadium are sewn, as the Giants inform the Yankees that they will not be allowed to play at the Polo Grounds following the current season. The Giants will later rescind their eviction notice, but by then, Yankee owner Jacob Ruppert has already begun searching for a new home in the Bronx.

... 1957, During Billy Martin's 29th birthday party at the Copacabana nightclub, six Yankees, including Martin, get into a brawl after Hank Bauer slaps a patron. Bauer, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, Mickey Mantle, and Martin are fined $1,000 each, and Martin is soon traded to Kansas City.

... 1967, Mantle joins the 500-home run club when he belts one off Baltimore's Stu Miller in a 6-5 Yankee victory. mantle is just the sixth player to reach the 500-HR mark.

... 1996, Dwight Gooden throws his only no-hitter, a 2-0 shutout of the Seattle Mariners at Yankee Stadium. Two weeks earlier, Gooden was nearly designated for assignment and cut by the team.
